It is sad and saddening. If these premier institutions are running short of funds to pay for even the fixed expenditure the Government should immediately step in and save them from the crunch. If there was no increase in the government grants for the last five years how can such institutions survive? The other solutions would be that (1) they should go in for more projects (2) private organizations support them and (3) Defence and other premier R&D organizations support by giving study projects on time bound basis. In any case immediate helping hand has to be rushed . Let these living institutions of higher learning and excellence not be allowed to starve !!!

I have an Idea .... Better to invest money on these institutions instead of giving too much fatty salary and BHATTA ( Extra benefits ) to our politicians ... overall they are working for general people !!! So many crores go in waste for bhattas on these politicians .. why not to cut out that !!!!

So how is 50% increase in capacity going to happen to accommodate reservation? Our so called intellectual PM, please explain? Our HRD minister does not even worth asking question...

HRD Ministry is doing this to intimiate the IIT's to accept the 27% reservation. Once they accept that there will be no issue with the funding. Government has money. They are withholding it to force the elite eductional organization to dance to their tune.

Here we pay 3 % education cess. Where does all the money go??
Maybe in educating the politicians' sons and daughters abroad.
In todays times when direct as well as indirect tax collections are at record highs, our government cannot pay IITs on time. wah .It happens only in India

This is the clearest indication that the government would not be able to fund existing scale of operations. When capacity is increased expenses will also increase and would the government pay more and on time then. If there is no money for salaries, will there be money for research etc....Slowly this government will ensure that IITs lose their glory.
I read arguements that collect money from students / companies etc....If money has to be collected from them, then why should government be involved in creating admission policies

If the Govt. cannot take care of such premier institutes, I wonder what will happen to this country? On one hand we boast about having the most talented crop of people, but the very Institute that nurtures them is in doldrums. I think it is time that the Govt stops talking about quotas and get to work on the problem in hand. What use is the quota if you do not have any institutes running? What a shame!!!

Tax Payer
Solution:
IIT should have a bond like what we have in institutions like Armed Forces Medical College. If someone want to leave India and go to US (which almost 99% will people do), they should pay 15 Lacs to the institute Or they serve DRDO / NIC / NTPC etc (Govt Hi-Tech teams) for atleast 7 years.
This way, IIT will become rich and will have more institutions and students who want to work with Indian Govt tech teams, can study at common man tax (no problem)
Why should Tax payers continue to pay for IIT grads who leave the country for Dollars.
( Posted: Friday , January 18, 2008 at 12:41 )
Because they generate revenue and income for India even if they are outside. The companies they set up do a lot of business in India too. Another reason is, because they clear a very tough entrance exam and just because you didn't does not mean they should pay. The exam was open to all the tax payers of the country.

Common man in India doesn't really pay Taxes. This is the fact - if you carefully analyse. Except around last 2 years, The Net Amount of Dollars Required was always very High for India. The Forex Requirement was so much that Govt Actually created Such a System that the Intellectuals of India got Exported by others or by themselves. Infact, Even today, The Net Forex Requirements of India is against India's capability. Only, The Dollar weakness is helping India. But, Too much of It is also dangerous. Finally, Before you say IITians are studying at the cost of Exchequer, Tell me, How many Govt Servants are paying taxes on their Bribes ? See How Politicians are increasing their Salaries. The Contribution of Profs and Students of IITs are umpteen times more than the above categories.

You say they fly away to earn $$$ ? What exactly they do with this Dollars ?? they fund india pump money into Indian systems , do you any surpise why our foreign reserve has grown into $293 billion in just few years .

Mr. Tax payer.. it's not only IIT grads who r leaving India for US or UK... anybody getting better opportunity is doing the same.. If we want our talents to stay back in India and work for organization like NTPC, DRDO.... we need to set good standard for these organisation and have better salaries... and cutting salaries of IIT faculty is not going to help in any way as suggested by some other here....
