New Delhi: It is the festive season and time to have cakes, puddings and pastries. But tempting as they are, they are also packed with calories.

And if you do not want to end up like fat like Santa Claus this season you, perhaps you can just begin by eating healthy.

“You can assume that per portion are over 300 calories. The smallest slice of an iced cake could be over 200 calories,” says nutritionist, Ishi Khosla.

The metabolic rate of your body slows down during the winters as outdoor activity is lessened.

However, your hunger pangs increase in addition to the indulgence in super-rich holiday food. And you will only be in danger of tipping over the scales you've been monitoring all year.

“In a week’s time you can gain about two to three kg,” says Khosla.

Increased holiday weight is also bad news for your heart and blood sugar levels.

“Basic ingredients of cake are eggs and a lot of oils and ghee which are nothing but saturated fats that gets converted into cholesterol in the body,”

So here is what the experts recommend:

  • Avoid sugar-based foods.
  • Opt for lean white meat.
  • Experiment with salad dressings and try different olive oils.
  • Have plenty of fruits.
  • Plan simple exercise sessions and other forms of relaxation.

“Go out and have a particular course in moderation. A lot of healthy foods are also available in the market,” HOD, Dietetics, Max, Dr Ritika Samaddar

You can enjoy the holidays this year but with a sense of moderation. And don't forget that all those New Year resolutions are just a few days away so you can make a head start for a healthy New Year.
