New Delhi: London's Leicester Square sizzled on Monday evening when Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth hit the red carpet for the world premiere of their film Mamma Mia.

The movie is the big screen adaptation of the successful stage musical of the same name and tells the story of 18-year-old Sophie, who hopelessly tries to discover the identity of her biological father before her wedding day.

Meryl Streep plays her mother and Brosnan and Firth play two of the three possible fathers.

"It seemed like a really great opportunity, to have a lot of fun and to be allowed to be free, physically, musically, emotionally. It's a great movie, it really is," said Meryl Streep.

Also spotted on the red carpet were two of Abba's former members, Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus. They, along with Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson, are the producers of the film, that uses Abba's tracks to tell the story.

"When I heard the third Abba song, I started singing along, and I thought, 'how do I know the words to this song?' And then I realised that I had known them all along. So I was dancing to the song by the end of it," says Tom Hanks.

Directed by Phyllida Lloyd Mamma Mia will release in the UK on 10 July 2008.

Journey to the Center of the Earth

And half way across the world in Los Angeles at another premiere, Brenden Fraser, Josh Hutcherson, Anita Briem and Seth Meyers walked the red carpet for their film Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Based on Jules Verne's classic of the same name, this 3D film has Fraser playing a professor whose radical ideas have made him a laughing stock.

The movie launches you on an amazing journey deep beneath the Earth's surface, and takes you through strange worlds, encountering bizarre creatures. And when questioned on how they would get to the center of the earth, the actors had quite a few ideas.

Josh Hutcherson said, "How would I get there? I would definitely take a big survival kit with a whole bunch of things like building materials, hammers, that sort of thing. I think I would get there by drilling down or maybe volcanic tubes like it is in the movie. That makes sense, it takes away a lot of labour from the drilling."

Brendan Fraser added, "I would bring a shovel and my blankie because it's dry heat down there."

Directed by Eric Brevig, the film opens across the US on July 11.
