ATARAM ARRESTED: The prime accuse in the chinkara killing case in Pune former Maharashtra CM Dharmarao Atram has been arrested.
Bhor, Maharashtra: Former Maharashtra Minister Dharamrao Baba Atram, charged with the killing of a chinkara deer, was arrested by Forest Department officials here in Pune district on Saturday.
Atram surrendered before the Sub-Divisional Forest Department office here on Thursday meeting the deadline set by Bombay High Court after it rejected his anticipatory bail plea.
He is the main accused in the case filed under the Protection of Wildlife Act.
Atram was taken to Saswad court near Pune on Saturday. The lawyers had applied for his bail but it was rejected.
Earlier last month Atram was caught by officials in Mahabaleshwar after villagers in Bhor taluka complained that they had seen him killing a chinkara.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Atram had to resign from the state Cabinet in July in the wake of the mounting pressure after the poaching episode.
