ON WARPATH: The letter is bound to escalate the confrontation between Mayawati and the UPA government.
Lucknow: A day after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati suspended four senior bureaucrats, Governor TV Rajeshwar wrote to her on Friday evening asking her to explain the reasons for the sudden move.
Faizabad divisional commissioner Venkateshwarlu and Sultanpur district magistrate Sanjay Kumar, both IAS officers, were suspended along with the local chief development officer and an information officer for allegedly glorifying certain members of the Nehru-Gandhi family in a book on the history of Sultanpur district.
In the foreword to the book, Venkateshwarlu and Kumar had praised the contribution of both Rahul Gandhi and his father, the late Rajiv Gandhi, towards the development of the district of which their Amethi parliamentary constituency was a part.
The letter is bound to escalate the simmering confrontation between Mayawati and the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government at the centre.
According to sources, the Chief Minister is understood to be preparing a scathing reply to the Governor's query. The reply is likely to be released to the media Saturday.
