New Delhi: It might be hard to stop yourself from over feeding your dog when they look at you with those loving eyes.
But feeding the wrong kind of food to your dog could be dangerous and sometimes fatal.
And for that matter, we all know that feeding chocolate to our dogs is unsafe. But a lot of food that we eat every day can not only be toxic to the dogs but also decrease their life span.
"A pound if chocolate can actually kill a dog. A lot of times children in the house love sharing their food with the dogs. They will eat chocolate and give some to the dog. That should not be done,” says veterinarian, Dr Pradeep Rana.
Some things to keep in mind while feeding dogs:
- Dogs should not be fed with too much of fish as that can cause vitamin A toxicity, which affects muscles and bones.
- Avoid tomatoes as they can cause tremors and abnormal heart rhythms.
- Grapes or raisins given even in a small amount can damage their kidneys.
- Oily food like French fries and pizzas can cause inflammation of the pancreas.
- Food containing onions or garlic can damage red blood cells and lead to anaemia. It can even lead to liver damage.
- And lastly feeding your dogs raw eggs can decrease the absorption of Vitamin B.
So what can dogs be fed with?
Says Dr Rana, “The best option is a broth with roti, 3-4 vegetables like carrots and gourd and daal.”
So the next time your dog tries to trick you into giving into their insatiable appetite, do not give in as that moment of pleasure may actually end up harming your dog.
