Mumbai: Film direction is an upcoming and popular career option, but to get into film direction one not only needs a passion for filmmaking but also the skill for it.
Director Sujoy Ghosh shares his views and experience which can help answer the queries of filmmaking aspirants.
It's the last leg of shooting at the Mehboob studios in Mumbai for Sujoy who is in the process of making his third film Alladin.
Work on the sets was rolling at a frantic pace as the film was during it's very first shot, but Sujoy could making sense of all the madness and chaos.
Though never on screen but Sujoy plays many roles on the sets from a punching bag one minute to a taskmaster the next.
Sujoy's first film Jhankaar Beats had no major stars but was still a huge hit. With his first film being a success it's very hard to imagine that Sujoy has had no formal training in cinema.
He does however have a management degree and says that it has come very handy in filmmaking."I did my MBA and I would say that direction is really all about managing various aspects of cinema," he says.
However Sujoy does admit that knowledge of cinema would also really help.
"I always feel that if you know what you want to do, then a basic education in that particular field always helps," he explains.
Institutes that provide professional training in filmmaking are:
- FTII in Pune which is the most lauded film school in India
- Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute in Kolkata
- Foundation Institute for Learning Media or FILM in Delhi
- Subhash Ghai's Whistling Woods International in Mumbai
For someone who has always been bedazzled by how good everything looks on the big screen, coming to a film set will be a real revelation.
Somewhere in the middle of all the chaos on the sets the director will always look for that perfect shot. Filmmaking is after all a highly risky but also rewarding profession.

While your coverage on film direction is noteworthy, it is sadly IBNLive's pro-Bollywood bias that gets reflected in the coverage.
