Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir police on Wednesday claimed to have gunned down the first woman terrorist in the state.

The police said Samreena Bano and her husband Abu Yashir, a Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) divisional commander, were killed in a gun battle in Doda district.

The police in a statement said, "In a joint operation, the troops of 8 Rashtriya Rifles and J&K (Jammu and Kashmir) police killed Shabir Ahmed Attoo alias Abu Yashir, a divisional commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba, and his wife Samreena Bano at Gundna in Khandepura on Wednesday."

"The operation was launched based on specific information regarding presence of the said terrorist and his wife, a listed terrorist, inside a house." An AK 47 rifle and a pistol were sized during the operation.

The police said that Bano, a resident of Faridabad locality of Doda town, would earlier ferry arms and other items for terrorists and was arrested in January this year.

During her interrogation she admitted to her links with the terrorists.

She, however, managed to get bail from a local court and walked out free. She joined LeT as an active terrorist a few months back.
