Majitha (Punjab): As the Assembly Elections draw closer, political parties are going all out to impress all sections of voters, including Christians in Punjab.

Cricketer-turned-BJP politician Navjot Singh Siddhu is campaigning in Amritsar, in his trademark style, trying to woo the Christian vote bank.

However, he refuses to acknowledge that it’s got anything to do with votebank politics. “Because of selfish vested interests of political parties. I have asked minority commission to take care of their interests,” he says.

But Sidhu and his Right Wing party are not the lone warriors for the cause of the Christians in Punjab. The Opposition is also trying its best to woo the minority.

“They want reservations and it requires national consensus. I have promised I'll look into it,” says Congress candidate Surinder Singla.

Majority of Christians live below the poverty line in Punjab and the community has been vocal about their demands including asking for reservation in government jobs.

“Parties keep promising but they don't do anything,” says a Christian Punjabi Shindo.

Christians are the third largest demographic group in the border districts of Amritsar, Gurudaspur and Ferozepur and their numbers could significantly influence electoral outcome in the border area constituencies.
