Mumbai: They say a script is the most important part of a film, one that you cannot just flip through.
Scripts can make or break a film, no wonder then, that it's the one thing that inspires tomes.
But everything can be taught, even to dummies. The guru of screenwriting, Syd Field, has tips for people with celluloid dreams.
The perfect screenplay has been spotted in real life, and not only in film schools.
“The three-act structure is there in everyday life. There's always a beginning, a middle and an end, but not necessarily in that order. And there's always a point when the beginning turns into the middle and a point when the middle into the end” explains Field.
That works in Hollywood though may be lost in translation in Bollywood, where scripts are often written on the sets. But there is hope yet.
“You take a film like Bride And Prejudice and measure it against one like Rang De Basanti and you have a difference like between night and day. Rang De Basanti touches you, moves you and inspires you. It’s the story of a generation making a change, it's a story of values changing,” says Field.
So aspiring screenwriters can still take heart. “See movies, read screeplays, write screenplays and don’t tell your story with dialogues, tell it with pictures,” he suggests.
