What does this deal mean for India and who will ultimately benefit from it?
Hyderabad: Rehana's brother Maqsood Ahmed was detained by the Hyderabad police as part of investigation into the terror attacks in the city. He was allegedly tortured while in police custody.
A month later, acting on Rehana's complaint, the Andhra Pradesh Minorities Commission has arrived at a list of 20 Muslims, who were allegedly tortured by the city police.
"This report shows that we are not alone and we are hopeful of getting justice,” Rehana Begum said.
The state government, which was guarded in its reaction, says action will be taken against the policemen if they are found guilty.
“We received the report about three days ago. The same has been forwarded to the Home Ministry and a review meeting has already been held. The Police Commissioner has been asked for a clarification. Once that comes, we will decide,” Minorities Welfare Minister Mohammad Ali Shabbir said.
Human rights activists say they will move the court demanding action against the police, citing the Minorities Commission report.
“This report is out and basing on this report we will approach the High Court because we want the government to take action and if it fails to do then we have no alternative,” Managing Editor of Siasat Daily, Zaheeruddin Ali Khan said.
The families are happy with the findings of this report, however they are still doubtful of getting justice. They say that the government should take serious action against all the police officials involved in order to regain confidence.
