SPEAKING OUT: After five years under house arrest Khan is speaking out in his defence.
New Delhi: As Musharraf's position looks untenable, Pakistan's detained Nuclear Scientist AQ Khan hopes to seize the opportunity to rehabilitate himself and stand vindicated.
Khan is the world's most famous or rather infamous nuclear scientist disgraced for running a worldwide black market in nuclear weapons and technology. But after nearly five years under house arrest he is speaking out predictably in defence of himself.
"I don't want to indulge in controversy. I'm innocent, yes I am innocent," says Khan.
In an interview over the phone to Dawn News Khan said he had done nothing wrong and had been made a scapegoat. he didn't name Musharraf but the implication was clear.
"Certain things you don't know in hindsight, you believe people and you find they were not telling the truth," he adds.
It was after the meeting with Musharraf in 2004 that Khan had confessed to peddling nuclear technology to Libya, North Korea and Iran.
He says he believed at that time the admission was in the national interest which is not the case any more evidently.
Public opinion is in Khan's favour and the Islamabad High Court is hearing a habeas corpus petition filed on his behalf.
