HOME COMING: Chaudhry’s street level agitation for his reinstatement was part of a bigger struggle.
New Delhi: Pakistan's suspended chief justice has been reinstated. In a majority verdict the Supreme Court special bench ruled that Iftikhar Chaudhry’s suspension was unlawful and illegal.
A crowning victory for the man who endured humiliation and incarceration by state agencies and overcame that to lead and shrewdly sustain a street level agitation for four months that would have done any politician proud.
Shortly after the verdict, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said, “We must all accept the verdict with grace and dignity reflective of a mature nation. This is not the time to claim victory or defeat. The constitution and the law have prevailed and must prevail at all times."
The reinstated chief justice says he will return to his office and will function purely as the Chief Justice of Pakistan. There are rumours of a rapprochement between Chaudhry and Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.
But Islamabad's legal community say Chaudhry’s street level agitation for his reinstatement was part of a bigger struggle that still remains to be fought and won the struggle to bring democracy back to Pakistan.
