IIT-B turns 50, ropes in India Inc to chart future

IIT-B TURNS 50: IIT is looking to collect Rs 500 cr from alumni and corporate houses to introduce new programmes.
Mumbai: From September 5, the IIT Bombay campus will be in the thick of celebrations as that is when it will kick off its 18-month Golden Jubilee celebrations.
It's time to look back at its past and chart out its future.
Says IIT Bombay Director, Ashok Misra, "We have done very well in teaching programmes. We have done quite well in research programmes but our research is not world-class, cutting edge research. We have been enhancing that over the last decade. We want to make sure that we take it to the next level so we truly are a world-class institution."
IIT is also looking to collect Rs 500 crore from alumni and corporate houses to introduce new programmes, collaborative research and infrastructural changes.
So, it has roped in the who's who of India Inc., including Mukesh Ambani, Ratan Tata, Rahul Bajaj, Adi Godrej and Anand Mahindra.
Besides a new convention centre and a new gymkhana, three hostels will come up to accommodate a 20 per cent increase in student numbers when the OBC quota kicks in.
With the IIT planning ahead, it hopes to have even more to celebrate in its Diamond Jubilee year.
