India, Kuwait set for a flight fight

New Delhi: Air connectivity between India and Kuwait will snap altogether should Kuwait execute its July 1 deadline.
Kuwait wants India to increase the number of seats allotted to it from 8,000 to 12,000 per week, which the government is not willing as it thinks that there is enough capacity.
“Kuwait’s request is not justifiable unless they have a originating passengers from Kuwait,” says Air Travel Enterprise, E M Najeeb.
Currently Air India operates four weekly flights from Mumbai while Indian operates from Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kozhikode, Tiruchirapalli, Ahmedabad and Goa.
Kuwait Airways and Jazeera operate daily flights to Mumbai and also weekly flights to other south Indian destinations.
“We have informed MEA the ambassador is talking to them,” says Spokesperson Civil Aviation Ministry, Maushmi Chakravarthy.
Worst affected will be the migrant labourers working in Kuwait. With no direct connectivity they will have to look at flying via a third country like Sri Lanka.
“It will not be of any harm to the Indians because so many other airlines are operating from Kuwait,” says a traveler.
Indian and Air India say they are making alternative arrangements should talks fail. Talks are on with airlines from other countries like Sri Lanka who will fly passengers booked on Indian and Air India.
