India, Pak open borders for truck trade

Wagah (Punjab): In a historic decision, India and Pakistan have decided to allow cross-border movement of trucks from the Wagah checkpost.
Starting October 1, Indian and Pakistani trucks will be able to cross the border and load and unload at the checkposts.
Earlier, porters from both countries had to walk for more than a kilometer carrying goods on their heads to the post.
“We are hopeful that there would be an increase in trade. Earlier there were time and movement restrictions which limited the number of trucks plying on the border,” says Director (Border Management), S K Swami.
The district administration is acquiring more than 100 acres of land to construct a second gate.
These decisions were taken after an Indian delegation inspected the customs facility in Pakistan and a similar study was done in India by a Pakistani team.
“A second gate will be opened and the customs area will be expanded and sanitized,” says Swami.
When the proposed second gate is opened, heavy trucks will be able to come right up to the Indian Ground station.
