India starts Operation Sahayata to help Myanmar

HELPING HAND: Two IAF AN-32 aircraft have taken medicines, tents and other essential supplies to Myanmar from New Delhi.

New Delhi: United Nations (UN) officials were finally given clearance to land one planeload of relief in Yangon on Thursday evening.
But the UN is still complaining about the Myanmar government's refusal to allow in more aid from other countries including the US.
Relief from India is being welcomed though. The Indian Air Force has airlifted over 40 tons of essential supplies to Yangon. Two IAF AN-32 aircraft and one IL-76 aircraft have taken medicines, tents and other essential supplies to Myanmar from New Delhi on Thursday.
Food, medicines, clothing and tents have been flown in under an operation code named Sahayata.
Two naval ships, INS Rana and INS Kirpan were the first ships to arrive with aid at Yangon on Wednesday.
The warships were carrying over 700 different types of items including generators and mosquito repellant.
According to Unites States of America officials nearly 1 lakh people have been killed by Cyclone Nargis in the Myanmar.
