New Delhi: Bengali actor Haradhan Bandopadhyay, a veteran of theatre, films and television serials, passed away in Kolkata on Saturday. He was 87. Bandopadhyay was last seen in Anurag Basu's 'Barfi' as the venerable head of a children's home.
He passed away this afternoon after battling for life for 15 days at a hospital in Kolkata. The 87-year-old actor is survived by his wife and twosons, family sources said.
The actor worked with Satyajit Ray in films like 'Shonar Kella' (Golden Fort), 'Jai Baba Felunath' and 'Mahanagar' among others. He also worked with other renowned directors like Mrinal Sen and Satyajit Ray's son Sandip Ray.
Recently, he gave an acclaimed performance in Anurag
Basu's film 'Barfi' and also worked in another Hindi movie 'Parineeta'.
Mourning the loss, Sandip said, "it is sad news and an irreparable loss to the film industry. It is difficult to find an actor of his capability at his age." Dadasaheb Phalke award winning actor Soumitra Chatterjee said, "It is difficult to express the loss. We have worked together at the AIR before coming to the film world."
Recently, the West Bengal government conferred the Banga Bibhusan award on Bandopadhyay. Bandopadhyay made his debut in director Atanu Bandopadhay's film 'Devdut' in 1948. He was born on November 6, 1926 in Bangladesh's Kushtiya.
His filmography includes 'Joi Baba Felunath', 'Sonar Kella', 'Seemabaddha', 'Mahanagar' and 'Akash Kusum'.
Bandopadhyay passed his Matriculation exam in 1944 from the City College and started his career at the Gun and Shell company in Kolkata. He joined a life insurance firm in 1946, according to TV channel ABP Ananda.
Actor Paran Bandopadhyay and Soumitra Chattopadhyay, who acted in many films with him said his death was a great loss for Bengali cinema. "I'm devastated by his death," Chattopadhyay said. "The embodiment of affection passes away," filmmaker Srijit Mukherji. (With inputs from PTI)
