Kochi: The Durbar Hall Ground in the heart of the city will get a facelift soon. The works to renovate the ground will begin after Onam. Out of the Rs 1.35 crore that has been sanctioned for the work, Rs 68 lakh will be sanctioned next week.
"The Durbar Hall Ground will be raised to international standards," said Tourism Minister AP Anil Kumar during his visit to the ground. The pond near the ground will be transformed into a boating centre for children.
The ground will also be the place for a family hangout in Kochi. A stage with a green room facility to host cultural programmes will also be built as part of renovation.
Its roof will be designed on Kerala vastu principles. Artificial grass carpet will be laid and seating arrangements will be constructed on the roof-top. Its back portion will be built in a manner where films could be telecast.
The renovation of Durbar Hall into a film theatre will be done taking expert opinions of technicians from the film industry. The projection and the sound engineering system would help people watch the film sitting anywhere in the ground. The sound and lighting will be given free of cost to the programmes staged in the ground.
A committee comprising experts from art and culture will be formed.
The duties of the renovation work has been entrusted to District Collector Sheikh Pareeth. MLAs Hibi Eden and VP Sajeendran also accompanied the Tourism Minister during his visit to the ground.
