Chandigarh: Ensnared in love for a girl here, NRI Shaganpreet Singh never wanted to return to his parents in Canada. So the 22-year-old staged his own kidnapping with the help of a friend so that he could miss his flight but the plan was laid bare by the police.
Shaganpreet and his friend Satinder Singh, 31, left their village Dhurkot in Punjab's Bathinda district April 20 for Delhi, from where the former had to board a flight for Canada.
But midway, Satinder called his friend Gurmeet and told him that they had been kidnapped by some unknown miscreants near Patiala. After this, both of them switched off their mobile phones.
Following this, their family members approached the police. During investigation, their car was found abandoned near Rajpura town in Patiala. Police also conducted raids in various parts of Punjab, Haryana and New Delhi.
"On Sunday, Satinder again called Gurmeet and said that the kidnappers have left them near Karnal and looted them of several lakhs of rupees. However, during investigation, we discovered that they had staged a kidnapping drama as Shaganpreet did not want to go back to Canada," said police officer Manjit Singh here Monday.
"Actually, he is in a relationship with a girl here and his parents are against it. Both the accused are fond of lavish lifestyle and big cars," he added. Both Shaganpreet and Satinder have been booked.
It has also came to light that Satinder Singh used to pose as a civil judge from Ropar and is under a debt burden of over Rs.30 lakh.
