HYDERABAD: The AP State Road Transport Corporation has invited tenders for making high-security number plates for motor vehicles in the state. The Union ministry of road transport and highways had asked the state government to enforce the tamper-proof number plates for all vehicles registered in the state. The government then asked the APSRTC to make the high-security plates and set up plate-fixing stations at all RTO offices in the state.
Transport minister Botcha Satayanaryana, transport commissioner Hiralal Samariya and RTC managing director B Prasada Rao have visited Germany and studied the working of the high-security number plate system there. RTA officials claim that the high-security number plates, which will be manufactured using advanced technology, can prevent vehicle theft, fake registration, use of fake number, illegal sale and tax evasion.
According to RTC managing director B Prasada Rao, a pre-bid meeting was held in September and the tender process, which is in progress, will be completed by the second week of November.
According to sources, the cost of the new number plate will burden a vehicle owner. It may cost Rs 500 to Rs 600 for a two-wheeler and the cost has to be borne by the owner of the vehicle.
