New Delhi: With Class 12th CBSE results due any time now, IBNLive interacted with a few students who have appeared in the 12th examinations this year and a few ex-students who have been through the grind to get an idea of what today's undergraduates would like to take up as their career options.
Though engineering and medical studies are the two highly sought-after disciplines, students, of late, have been showing their interest in other fields too.
It's really amusing to get reactions from people when you introduce yourself as a journalist, who opted out of an engineering college.
Sujit Anand, an MBA who is working with a consulting firm in New Delhi, shed some light on the changing trends these days and the way things were five years back. Narrating his own experience, Anand said that his father gave him only two options to choose from: engineering or medicine. He had no other choice.
But, today, the trends in the society have been changing and disciplines like journalism, humanities and others are much in demand too.
Speaking to Kartikey, a 12th standard student who appeared with commerce and aspires to join Delhi University for an Economics (Honours) course, IBNLive came across a few unknown facts about new college goers. He said, "Today students have started giving unbiased attention to all the possible career options and finally choose the one of their interest." Quality education and a beneficial environment is what a student prefers, they are more career-oriented and demand an explanation before taking any step.
Aaina Bansal, a student who appeared in the AISSCE examination with Humanities, believes, "Though it's important to have a successful career with a good package, what matters the most is a sense of satisfaction that one should derive from her/his opted career."
Rajat Arora, a 12th appeared with PCM, has been interested in science and aspires to be a scientist. He says, "In a country like ours, it is difficult to opt for such a career as opportunities are less and the growth rate is slow."
No matter how many students climb the ladder of success, but it is interesting to note that the times are changing and students, today, are taking into account other career options like sports medicine, journalism and fashion designing. Moreover, parents have also become more supportive and acknowledge other career options.
