Rs 118-crore hostels opened at VIT

Union Minister Dr C P Joshi on Saturday inaugurated two new hostel buildings at the VIT university. The buildings were constructed at a cost of Rs 118 crore, occupying 6.52 lakh square feet that can accommodate about 2,300 students.Speaking on the occasion, VIT chancellor G Viswanathan said that the hostels have been named after great leaders, Quaid-e-Millat Muhammed Ismail and Charles Darwin. He said that over 20,000 students from 28 countries were studying in the university, 50 per cent of them being from North India.Joshi in his address hailed VIT for promoting inventions and research activities in a big way. While technological advancement was driving the world, we are forced to upgrade our education system to compete with others, he said, adding that a lot of new thinking was needed to be introduced into the system.Vellore MP Adbul Rahman, Vice Chancellor Raju, vice presidents Shankar Viswanathan, G V Sampath and Sekar Viswanthan spoke on the occasion.
