Rs 400 crore plan by GHMC to beautify city

HYDERABAD: With the city being selected to host the prestigious 11th Conference of Parties (CoP) from October 16 to 18, the muncipal corporation of Greater Hyderabad is gearing up to improve the infrastructure and further beautify the city at a cost of Rs 400 crore. Representatives from 153 countries are expected to attend the Convention on Biological Diversity.Seminars and discussions will be held for 15 days from October 1 to 15.Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain on Thursday presented an outline of works, with special focus on roads and tourist destinations, to be undertaken by the GHMC, at a standing committee meeting on Thursday.Two road corridors with a total length of 123 km connecting HICC, the venue for the event, to star hotels, heritage tourist sites and the airport have been identified.The Rs 140 crore needed for improvement of roads under the purview of the NHAI, R&B and GHMC would be tapped from the respective heads of departments, the mayor said.As part of the city beautification, the green cover will be extended and streetlighting improved.In addition to state governments grant of Rs 300 crore, the GHMC has requested the Union government to grant Rs 800 crore for the international event.It will be the biggest event to be held in India since Independence.Works will thus begin next month itself, he said, adding that the chief minister had assured him of full support Proposals approved by standing committee* Health assistants to be promoted as sanitary inspectors in the pay scale of `5,750-12,955 on ad hoc basis * Installation of simultaneous interpretation system (device to translate Telugu into Urdu and vice versa) in the GHMC council hall at a cost of Rs 1.08 crore * Decision put off on construction of ward office at Giani Zail Singh Nagar, Filmnagar, Jubilee Hills.
