New Delhi: For helping women in distress, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit requested Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal to allot a three digit phone number. A three-digit number, 167, has been allotted for the Chief Minister's helpline for women.
Women can also look forward to alerting their friends and family through the push of a button on sensing danger using a mobile application called 'Fight Back'. Developed by mobile value added services provider CanvasM, the application tracks a user's location and sends SOS messages to selected contacts in case of an emergency.
This comes a week after a 23-year-old medical student was brutally gangraped inside a moving bus in Delhi. While the gangrape survivor is battling for life in Safdarjung Hospital, the nation came together to protest against crime against women and demand speedy justice for the survivor.
The protests turned violent on Sunday and police lathicharged protesters including wome. The police also fired water cannons and tear gas shells. Over 140 protesters were injured, while one policeman was critical.
Following the violence, the government shut down all routes to India Gate on Monday. However, the protesters remained undeterred and gathered in large numbers at Jantar Mantar to continue the protests.
