MISINTERPRETED: Speaking to CNN-IBN, Taslima Nasreen denied calling Indian govt fundamentalist.
New Delhi: A day after Taslima Nasreen was quoted by news agencies describing Indian government “no better than religious fundamentalists," the controversial Bangladeshi author has sought to clear the air.
Speaking to CNN-IBN National Affairs Editor Diptosh Majumdar from a hospital in Europe, Taslima said she never called India fundamentalist.
“I am against all forms of obscurantism and fundamentalism. I write for human rights so I oppose all forms of fundamentalism,” she said over the phone.
She, however, expressed her disappointment with the way India handled the controversy surrounding her stay in India.
“I am unhappy that the Indian government gave in to this kind of fundamentalist pressure. I never said India is fundamentalist,” Taslima added.
Taslima has been hospitalised for a detailed medical check-up in Europe for her cardiac and hypertension complaints. She said that she owes a lot to the Indian government who has spent so much on her over the past several months, but she was unhappy with the medical treatment she received. She still hoped to get back to Kolkata by August this year.
Taslima is expected to be in hospital for the next 48 hours for the check-up.
