New Delhi: A team of 50 Indian paramedics has begun helping cyclone survivors in Myanmar's Irrawaddy delta.

The team is treating hundreds of people in worst cyclone-hit areas of Pyanpon and Bogale, southwest of Yangon. The team is travelling by boats to villages in the areas in the delta region. "They are the only medical teams on the ground in the region," Defence Ministry officials said here. The medicos were divided into two teams and airlifted to Yangon on Saturday.

Indian Army doctors are the only foreign medical team along with ones from Thailand that have been allowed to carry out humanitarian medical relief in the country, where cyclone Nargis has already claimed upwards of 130,000 victims.

The Indian team is carrying medicines, portable water and other essential supplies help victims, officials said.
