joydeep i strongly object to this topic. the exam process itself takes whole 1 yr to complete. that means if anyone appears for it, till his final results are out,1 yr of his life passes by. is it the fault of the candidates who appear for this exam??... and the candidates who appear for this prestigious exam knows very well that they have to sacrifice everything for at least 3 yrs if they want the ticket to enter LBSNAA......
what should be done is to reduce the whole exam process by 6 months or so.. that means if a general candidate gives all his attempts, he will do it in 2yrs. thus 2yrs of a candidate is saved., before ending, like to ask u"ll a question. if this exam was a national past time, then why do majority of the toppers leave their cushy corporate jobs to prepare for this exam and dive into a sea of uncertainty??.. didnt knew today's youth were so fond of their past times instead of their carrers!!!!

vikram hi,
its the answer to the question that what government can do for aspirants? since number of attempts are 4 in case of general category students these can be limited to 2. so that those who can work efficiently and sincerely can make it through. people doesnt work hard with sincerety and just keeps playing with exam and with their own time and money. though there are candidates who top the exam in 3 or 4 attempts....wht they do in there 1 and 2nd attempts?...i my idea..the number of attempts should be limited to maximum 2 so that a lot of youth time can be saved from westage.

uma i think the UPSC should look into the background of students who crack the exam. most of the successful candidates are the ones who can afford to go for coaching or come from elite schools and backgrounds. they get to know what to study for the exam right from school and are trained accordingly. would a person from a lower middle class family, however bright, risk one whole year of his life preparing for this exam when there is no guanrantee that he or she will crack the exam? after the age of twenty, family presssure to earn mounts on guys while girls come under pressure to get married.another important thing to look into is to ensure that non-creamy layer certificates for OBC candidates are given after strict investigations. there are many instances of people understating their incomes so as to get the non-creamy layer certificates.another aspect is the bias towards regional languages. candidates who take a regional language as one of their optionals invaraibly score higher than equally bright students who, unfortunately, take other subjects.

Karthik "Once you are left behind, nobody takes care of you. By that time, you ultimately miss your attempts and there are very few things that one can do,"I certainly agree with this.If someone thinks to crack this exam, the preparation should start at the high school itself. The exam pattern is absolutely a standard one,I don't think it has to be changed.Any way,my heart congratulations to all who have got through this.

sadana Why v should blame the government for this manner of conducting UPSC exams.ofcourse most of the guys and girls who failed after repeated attempts indeed waste their time. But one should plan his future before he r she could try for it.First of all one must decide based on his/her familys financial condition.if his family is in a good financial condition and does not expect the income from him, then he can try for it.At the same time if he is from a middle class society,he should not waste his time, rather he should try that while going for job simultaneously no matter how many attempts you make. This Exam is about self determination. If one thinks that he can do it and he has to achieve that at any cost ,he will do that.I have seen some candidates who have topped the list in this manner.

nagarajan The ground work to bring out the best should start from high school level. Prime Minister who mooted this idea and it seems it's in cold storage. Chruning out IAS from coaching factory and being interviwed by some old bandicoots will generate only mediocreS with IAS 'Tag' for marriage market and 'Time Pass' IAS officers joining it to mint money through corrupt ways, taking shelter in the name politicians

Ravi.S hi,
UPSC exams are not national passtime,i strongly object to this topic. Sir first ask a civil service aspirant what all the trauma he is faceing. The examination cycle itself is 1 year process so the candidate has to be focused , if he misses the preliminary level he has to wait for next prelims only.It is the toughest nut to crack , it tests the patients very much and psychological stability and many more. One more thing only the winners are recognised but in other corporate world we have many thing to choose. It is my opinion getting into is simply great and the exam pattern is simply great.Well done to all the toppers.

pavan I think UPSC should concentrate on involving subjects which makes the candidate to face the real or live problems ex:what is the location emergency plan for a city which has been informed tht it will be effected by tsunami by 48 hours then?
instead of going through voluminous study course ,it should make the candidates to solve real case study or somethig of that sort,,,

H.Jena It is waste of time and energy for those who could not succeed in UPSC exam. It is time for the gov. to rethink about the selection procedure.

ravish kumar u write in the last para that the govt should do smthing about it.what do u expect the govt to do about it?
there is nothing wrong on the upsc's part as far as i can see. the decision to continue attempting lies with the aspirants, it's their call, they make it. what can govt do about it?
