New Delhi: As the news of his shocking death spread, reality show winner and singing sensation Ishmeet Singh’s hometown Ludhiana was plunged into sorrow.

The winner of Amul Star Voice of India 2007 contest, 20-year-old Ishmeet had gone to Maldives to participate in a music concert. On Tuesday, he drowned in a swimming pool at the resort he was staying in.

“He informed me of his plans to Maldives. We had a function at home and I insisted he stay back, but he prioritised for his trip and I can't believe that the same God has taken him from us,” said a grieving relative.

Ishmeet had given up his studies to participate in the reality contest and was crowned the winner in November 24, 2007, by the legendary Lata Mangeshkar.

Ishmeet shot to stardom with Punjabis across the world voting for him in the contest.

“It was a real shock for me as the death of a musical gem came as unbelievable to me. I still can't imagine that he is no more with us,” said Music Director, Lalit Sen.

Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal also expressed his shock. “It's a shock for the entire nation. I am here to be a part of the grieved family,” he said.

Ishmeet had been struggling to make a name for himself in playback singing. He had even released a Punjabi album called Gurbani recently.
