New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday came down heavily on the Delhi Police's Special Investigation Team for its report on the Jessica Lall murder case and questioned its impartiality in the way it probed the case.

The court described the Special Investigation Team's probe as a "waste of paper, time and law".

The court also took exception to the filing of a second FIR in the case while the first FIR still existed.

“This is the first case in the criminal justice system where a separate FIR has been filed in a case while an FIR was still existing. Does it not lead to safe inference that you (Delhi Police) were trying to assist the accused,” a Division Bench comprising Justice R S Sodhi and Justice H R Malhotra said.

The Bench also questioned the relevance of SIT report on the laxity in the investigation of Jessica Lal muder case.

“We haven't judged your investigation report. The report is nothing but a rotten piece of paper. It is absolutely nothing. We do not know the purpose behind it," the Bench said.

"We are aware of what is happening. You think we do not know what's going on but we are well aware," the court said while pulling up the Delhi Police.

The Bench was referring to the FIR, which was filed by Delhi Police against its officials for not properly conducting the investigations in the case.

The FIR was lodged after Delhi High Court took suo motu cognizance on the media reports showing alleged laxity on the part of Delhi Police.
