New Delhi: Pulitzer prize winning author Jhumpa Lahiri has won what's considered to be the world's richest honour for a short-story collection.

The Frank O’Connor award was for her latest book Unaccustomed Earth. The jury unanimously voted her the winner and took the very unusual step of skipping straight from the long list to the winner.

Unaccustomed Earth comprises short stories of Bengali migrants, increasingly being seen as Jhumpa's forte given previous success stories like The Namesake and Interpreter of Maladies.

Lahiri was pitched against Booker Prize winners Anne Enright and Roddy Doyle but her bestselling book won the 27,000-pound prize.

She will formally get the award on Sep 21 at the end of the Frank O’ Connor International short story festival in Cork, England.
