New Delhi: CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat on Saturday spelt out the Left's separation plan, ending any hope the Government may have had of finding a middle path to break the nuclear impasse.
The fait accompli from the CPM came just a day after the Congress leadership put its weight behind its Prime Minister on the deal.
So the CPM made an appeal to the allies to see sense when the Prime Minister, they alleged, was simply concerned with keeping commitments made to George Bush.
"At a time when the Government should be tackling inflation, the PM and the Congress leadership are more concerned about fulfilling their commitment to Bush,” said Karat.
With the Left's course of action now laid out in black and white, the Congress's interlocutors are channelising their energies to strike a deal with the SP and the former foe appears to be yielding.
"Sour relations with the Congress are a thing of the past,” SP chief Mulayam Singh told CNN-IBN.
But if Mulayam were to bail this Government out, it would defeat the Left's purpose. Will the left then sponsor a no confidence motion against this Government and vote with the opposition?
The answer to that question could come as early as before the monsoon session.
