New Delhi: CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat has threatened to shake the Government if it goes ahead with the nuclear deal. The Left’s stand is clear: If it means sacrificing the Prime Minister, so be it.

After it came to light that the Prime Minister has threatened to quit office, the CPI-M hardened its stance.

“The UPA is not one issue government. And it was a commitment made by government,” Karat said.

Allies met the Government's ace trouble-shooter Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday and on Friday the allies like the NCP and the SP were conferring with Karat.

Some of them were hopeful of a solution. “We shall speak to the Left. Government is trying too. We need a consensus,” he said.

The Congress has still been speaking in many voices. There have been leaders like Priya Ranjan Das Munshi and Kapil Sibal who have pledged their commitment to the nuclear deal.

On Friday, the party's future challenges group head, Veerappa Moily sounded less hostile. “I don't think they (Left) will take hard decisions,” he said.

May be, the point of no return has to be reached but this confrontation will definitely have either one of the two, Manmohan Singh or Prakash Karat eating his words.

In the past it's Singh who has taken a step back, will he retrace his steps again?
