Gurgaon: The alleged mastermind behind the Gurgaon kidney racket is Dr Amit Kumar, but he may just be a single name in the organ trade. Police are now probing possible links to some big hospitals in Delhi. A diagnostic centre in New Delhi's Green Park area is also under the scanner.

Moradabad SSP, Prem Prakash says, "Many hospitals and laboratories have come under the scanner after we found that people were taken there for check ups before their kidneys were removed. There these peoples have been registered under false names and addresses."

What alerted the police were the links between one of the accused, Dr Upender Kumar Aggarwal, and the hospitals that are now under the scanner. Aggarwal is currently in judicial custody. A list of likely hospitals involved is being drawn up.

One of the hospitals which is under the scanner, Delhi's Batra hospital has denied involvement in the racket, claiming that the police have named the hospital merely as a diversionary tactic.

Spokesperson Batra Hospital, Rajani Khamesra says, "As far as tests are concerned, we run within the framework and the norms laid down by the Government. Tests can be done in any laboratories."

Investigations prove the Rs 100 crore racket is far more widespread than previously believed and a woman — who is a Greek national and allegedly Dr Amit Kumar's girlfriend — is the tout in international deals.

Amit Kumar's residence and the hospitals in which he performed more than 500 illegal kidney transplants have been sealed by police.
