Bangalore: Former Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy underwent a successful open heart surgery at a private super specialty hospital in Bangalore on Thursday.
The 49-year-old JDS leader underwent a valve replacement surgery. “His blood reports are normal and he is recovering well,” Dr Vivek Jawali, who performed the surgery, said.
The doctor said despite the surgery Kumaraswamy would be fit enough to campaign in the coming state assembly elections.
”Kumaraswamy is recovering briskly and would be fit enough to undertake tours and participate in election rallies after a month and half,” he said.
Kumaraswamy, a diabetic, had been suffering from "congenital bicuspid aortic valve" which had led to a "severe calcific aoartic stenosis with gross left ventricular hypertrophy", Jawali explained.
"This obstruction was detected one year ago as mild but due to diabetes it has progressed rapidly reaching a severe stage, causing him chest pain on exertion and leading to a threat of a 25 per cent possibility of sudden death", he added.
Kumaraswamy would be kept in ICU for two days and would require a week's stay at the hospital.
