Kolkata: Srimati Byapari's latest assignment has Kolkata on the move. She is one of the seven lady officers who’ll directing traffic at some of the city’s busiest crossings.
However, there are some initial roadblocks.
“If a man can do it so can we but the department should try and give us a few more amenities like a changing room,” Bypari says.
For the department, it is not just a matter of pride. They hope that the lady officers will bring a degree of compassion to the job.
"They will bring a change in the way traffic police works in the city. The women are well trained to handle any situation, then why not traffic?" says Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Manoj Kumar Verma.
The novel move by Kolkata Traffic Police has been met with part apprehension, part enthusiasm and lots of hope.
