Varanasi: Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi's parliamentarian son Rahul Gandhi is receiving political back-patting from across party lines.

On Monday, Union Railway Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad said that the active role being played by Rahul in Uttar Pradesh, ahead of next year's Assembly polls, was an indication that he ready to lead the party at the hustings in the state.

Lalu confirmed that the RJD would contest seats in Eastern UP. For the remaining seats in the state, however, it would support the Congress.

It is not the first time that Rahul is campaigning for the party. In May, he campaigned for his mother, Sonia, during the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha by-elections.

Ever since the family won the Amethi Lok Sabha seat in 2004 general elections, Rahul has been actively campaigning in Amethi and Rae Bareli constituencies.

During his visit to Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, Lalu also attacked the BJP for its "Ram Temple gimmick".

He said that the Opposition's move to rekindle the movement for the building of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya was an attempt to communally polarise the society for electoral gains.

Lalu also criticised the Mulayam Singh-led Government in Uttar Pradesh for the poor law and order situation and economic development in the state.
