New Delhi: The Left parties are expected to give the Government permission to discuss the Indo-US nuclear deal with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) but will not allow it sign the India-specific safeguards.
A committee comprising leaders of the four-party Left Front and the Government will discuss the nuclear deal at a meeting on Friday evening. The Left parties are expected to give a partial concession to the government by permitting talks with the IAEA but won’t allow “operationlisation” of the deal.
A PTI report quoting unnamed sources said the Left parties want the government to clarify would fuel supply to India continue if the Indo-US deal fell through. The parties suspect that India would be bound in perpetuity in agreements with IAEA or the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers' Group if the US gets out of the deal.
The Left parties, whose concerns stem from implications of the Hyde Act on the 123 agreement, also feels Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's assurances that the Indo-US nuclear agreement would cover the entire nuclear fuel cycle could be violated if the US walked out of the deal any time. The Left leaders also want to know whether India would be able to get dual-use technology.
