Birmingham: An Indian student was murdered in the UK and her flat mate, also an Indian, Nalluri Nagraj Kumar has been charged with murdering her.
When Samrajya Jyothirmayee Vempala was found dead in Birmingham on Tuesday, Nalluri Nagraj Kumar was found at the same residence badly injured.
Jyothirmayee, a 23-year-old student from Vijayawada, was pursuing a postgraduate medical degree at the University of Wolverhampton. Jyotirmayee and Nalluri had gone to the UK through the same education consultants in September, last year.
Supposedly, both were the victims of a violent attack. However, it turns out there was only one victim and the other was faking it.
The police say most of Nalluri's injuries are allegedly self-inflicted, meant to mislead the investigators. The 24-year-old physiotherapy student was presented in the Birmingham magistrate's court on Friday, however, his bail plea was rejected. Nalluri's lawyer has said his client is not pleading guilty.
“On behalf of Nagaraj Nalluri, I can say that after extensive police questioning, he denied responsibility for the death of Samrajya Vempala. He continues to deny it and will contest the matter at the eventual trial,” says Nalluri Nagraj's Solicitor, Sarah Brinklow.
Nalluri’s parents in Hyderabad were seen leaving their house two days ago.
“The whole family left 2 days back. They packed small bags and left in autorickshaws. We don't know where they've gone,” says Secretary, Vasudha Apartments Building Association, C Karan.
