Birmingham: A court in Birmingham has denied bail to Nagaraja Kumar Nalluri, the Indian charged with murdering fellow Indian Vempala Samrajya Jyothirmayee. A heavily bandaged Nalluri appeared in court on Friday.

The police claim Nalluri's injuries are self-inflicted and meant to mislead the investigators.

Jyothirmayee, a 23-year-old medical student from Vijayawada, was murdered on Tuesday. The post-mortem had established that she died as a result of head injuries.

Nalluri's lawyer, however, has said his client is not pleading guilty.

"On behalf of Nagaraj Nalluri, I can say that after extensive police questioning he denied responsibility for the death of Samrajya Vempala. He continues to deny it and will contest the matter at the eventual trial," he said.

CNN-IBN Correspondent Akanksha Banerji reports that the Nalluri has been remanded to custody for another week.

"It was in Court Seven that Nagaraja Kumar Nalluri appeared with bandages around his head indicating serious injuries. He has been remanded to custody for another week and will appear in Crown Court on May 16. Solicitors did not make a bail application. The district judge withheld bail on grounds that it was a serious allegation of murder and also that he may not meet bail formalities and it was needed for his own protection. So bail has been denied," she reports.
