GRAVE ISSUE: The half-burnt skulls and bones were exhumed by CRPF personnel before senior officials on Thursday.
Kolkata: The human remains found at graves in Khejuri-Talatula near Nandigram are yet sent to the Central Forensic Laboratory in Hyderabad for forensic testing.
The District SP has said that the identity of the victims and the way in which they died could only be determined after a proper DNA test.
The half-burnt skulls and bones were exhumed by CRPF personnel before senior officials, including CBI Joint Director Arun Kumar and Judicial Magistrate J P Singh.
Authorities say the bodies may be of CPM workers killed in a bomb explosion at a relief camp.
IGP Law & Order, West Bengal, Raj Kano said, "The investigation is still in early stages. The remains of the victims have been brought to the police station and are being sent to a forensic lab."
He added that the police found the grave site on a tip off and were now looking for more clues that would help identify the victims and to help understand why they had been killed.
"CRPF personnel are there in good numbers and specialised forces are camping in the area. A CID team is also moving in. Essentially, our work is to establish peace in the area. We are also looking for more missing people and more bodies," he added.
