Bangalore feels the pinch of the power crisis
The power cuts are the worst in the last five years, say Bangaloreans.
After running for 98 years, the famous Toy Train of Matheran is resting in its shed in Neral. Heavy rains have damaged the tracks and some officials say that it could stop running.
Dr. Frank Wingler, has been doing research on the Indian Railways for the past 15 years and now works as a consultant with Sri Lankan Railways. He says that the toy train might never run again.
"It will become too costly to rebuild it according to modern safety requirements and techniques," Wingler said.
The officials at Central Railway on the other hand are optimistic. They promise that the train will be able to run before it enters its centenary year in 2007.
"We are very confident that the train will run. Of course, the damage has been extensive but it’s a matter of time before it starts running again," Sunil Jain, Central Railways PRO said.
The UNESCO has included the Matheran Hill Railways in its primary list of World's Heritage.
The heritage railway will become the third mountain railway unit of India to be given the status of a "World Treasure" if it manages to get an entry in the final list.
Earlier, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railways of West Bengal and the Nilgiri Mountain Railways of Tamil Nadu have been awarded the "World Treasure" status in 1999 and 2005 respectively.
