Lucknow: UP Chief Minister Mayawati and Samajwadi party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav saw eye-to-eye for the first time in more than a decade. The meeting was convened at Mayawati's official residence on Friday to finalise nominees for the State Human Rights Commission.

If sources in the government are to be believed, this is for the first time after a gap of almost 13 years that Mayawati personally called up Mulayam and invited him for this meeting.

Mayawati heads the selection committee for the rights panel, while Mulayam is a member of the committee in his capacity as leader of the Opposition.

By evening the Uttar Pradesh information department was busy distributing visuals of this meeting to the media. Some in Mulayam's party are clearly not happy with the meeting.

“She called them at home. You can understand what it means,” said SP general secretary, Shiv Pal Yadav.

Mayawati and Mulayam have not been on talking terms since the collapse of their coalition in 1995. Now their unexpected meeting has clearly caught everyone in Lucknow's political circles by surprise.
