Lucknow: The Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh has cancelled the recruitment of 6,500 police personnel made by the Mulayam Singh administration.

In a major clampdown, the state government has said that the recruitments done between 2004 and 2006 disregarded all norms and regulations and has suspended 12 IPS officials.

It has also lodged an FIR and has ordered a detailed inquiry into the irregularities in the recruitment of at least 22,000 police personnel in UP.

Nine Deputy Inspector Generals, two Senior Superintendents of Police, and one Inspector General apart from 18 ASPs and 40 circle officers have been suspended for their involvement.

"Fresh recruitments would be made to 6,500 sets within six months,” Principal Secretary Home, N Chamber.

The inquiry committee submitted a detailed report to the government, a copy of which is available with CNN IBN. The report indicates:

• The minimum height norm was overlooked.
• Forged mark-sheets of Class X were submitted.
• Tabulation sheets were found to be incorrect.
• Forged letters of caste certificate and dependents of freedom fighters were found.
• Discrepancies in answer sheets were found.
• Several criminals with pending cases too had managed to join the force.

The suspended officials are now looking for legal options. However, Samajwadi party leader Amar singh rubbished the allegations and said it was only political vendetta.

“Police persons who are giving this report have been handpicked by this regime,” he said.

This is for the first time that scam of this magnitude has come to light in UP police force.

While action has been taken against the policemen involved in the scam, it remains to be seen if politicians involved would face the heat too.
