London: A mechanic who couldn't afford his dream vintage Mercedes racing car, has now made one out of a 70-pound Citroen 2CV.

According to The Telegraph, Max Hyde, 26, has spent around £10,000 on the car in the last two years.

He combined his love of the much-derided French car with his passion for the 1930s Mercedes Silver Arrow racing car.

He removed the top of the bright red 2CV but kept the engine, wheels, suspension, gearbox and headlights.

He built new bodywork out of steel tubes and aluminium to create the 12-feet replica of the Mercedes W25 Silver Arrow.

Called the Max Hyde Motors Mark II, it can do 90 mph.

"I didn't think it would take as long as it has but it's great to get the car finally finished. It's a great Christmas present to myself," he said.

"It looks like a Silver Arrow but drives and handles like a 2CV."
