People who talk about nude sculptures vs. Hussain's paintings neither understand art nor culture. There is a distinct line between art and obscenity and the paintings of Hussain are widely circulated in the Net for people to form a reasonable judgement. He has misuused his artistic licence portaying the Hindu Gods and goddesses in despicable acts (not merely nude) and therefore deserves our utmost contempt. His sense of artistic freedom and his Indianness becomes questionable. Freedom and that too by eminent personalities is couple with a reponsibility towards all people for they should be role models. If Hussain could be called a "rouge painter" it would be an understatement-for he has debased himself to street artistics who paint for money and not art for arts sake. Unfortunately todays secularism in India stands for two things-one is to flaunt your atheism and the other is to attack or deride anything Hindu so that the secular credentials are established. Those who support Hussain belong to this category. Leave aside the Hindy Gods-my only appeal is to see what he has painted and come to your own conclusion whether such acts are permissible in any civilised society.

Bhaskar Chatterjee
As usual, this report deliberately omits crucial details. It does NOT say, Indian High Commissioner in London himself inagurated this exhibition. Imagine, Indian Govt associate themselves in inagurating DVC or Mohamud Cartoons.
Denigrating their own culture is Secularism to a section of self-hating hindus. Additionally, they pamper Muslims, Xtians at drop of a pin.
This double standard has created problem for themselves.

M.F.Hussain, inspite of his abundant talent, is a loose cannon after cheap publicity - the media and the bollywood celebrities should avoid him and probably he will regain his senses.

Now this is what i dont understand. On one hand when we boast of the nude statues in our holy temples and curse the muslims for their intollerence, how can we be like them.
( Posted: Tuesday , May 23, 2006 at 10:23 )
Hi, It is ok to have anonymous statues that are aethestically done. But when you associate name of deities with those kind of statues, there is a problem. Just imagine someone draws a nude painting. You wont be too bothered with that. But just imagine that painter says it is a painting of your parents...

Don't write comments on subjects you are ill-informed.

Dear Situ,You seem to be confusing the issue. Firstly there is no nude statue anywhere in our temples. Something which one revers like God or Goddess cannot be exhibited nude by a devotee. Your presumption is therefore baseless. if you are referring to stone images of Ajanta and Ellora then remember those are not temples but works of art. Kamasutra depicted and read it as not pornography but as a living knowledge. We donot curse Muslims for their criticism but for their violent actions. Catholics recently protested against the filming of Da Vinci Code and nobody cursed them. To criticise is our individual right but the violence associated with it is deplorable. And by the way have you seen MF's paintings. These are bizzare. Sita painted nude on the tail of Hanuman. It looks like the work of a sexual maniac out to denigrade a community. Raz

situ, the nude statues in temples are not of God being worshipped...
( Posted by arasu on )
The nude statues at khajuraho are not of deities but normal people. And we do not worship the deities nude. Hussain has painted them committing acts of incest and that is far more offensive than a stupid cartoon or a suggestion of a wife and kids.

mohd ilyas
yes, he is a shame to the nation for having painted hindu gods in a disrespectful manner. action should be taken against him and his painting not only should be banned but also he should be boycotted as a whole. no body should hurt religious feeling in any form.i also take the oppurtunity to criticise very same people who raise hue and cry over muslim protest over our prophet paintings which was also disrespectful.the same rule should be applied for all and u people should also change your attitude and should speak out for the good of the nation and humanity

No body from hindus said the cartoons on prophet are right. But you should know how to conduct a protest rally peacefully.

Excellent news! Hindus in UK trully worship Hindu deities. When will the Hindus in other parts of the world realise the importance of not letting go any denigration of Hindu deities unprotested?

Being a Christian i have studied the truly Divine Spiritual Science in the Hindu scriptures. I have also practiced spirituality as per this science and have found it works like magic. Chanting 'Om Hum Hanumate Namah' and 'Sree Durgadevyai Namah' and 'Om Gung Ganpatayai Namah' have given me some astounding spiritual experiences. Having gained so deeply from these deities can you imagine my outrage when i saw the paintings of Husain degrading Them in such a vile manner. I am so grateful to God that so many people world wide feel the same way and are standing up to this filthy man and all those who promote his shameful art.

I am astonished. The benefits of Indian spirituality is appreciated by a westerner. I only hope that all Indians will get the same benefits one day.

I bow down to you Sharon for your comments-in the words of Swami Vivekananda "if one religion be true, then all other religions are equally true" . No man of true religious belief will stoop to the levels that Hussain has descended and deserves our contempt. If everyone of us, irrespective of our religious belief, hold the same spirit that you have shown, our India will be a better place.

There should be more people like you. You appreciate all religions unlike the "secularists" in India.
