I was previlaged to grow up in an "Upper Middle Class" family, with all the amenities and excellent education available to me. Today, my only objective in life is to break the barrier and get into the elite class and give my children a better future, and I don't see anything wrong. Having known Elaben and SEWA, (through a family member who works for the organization(in vain, but that's my opinion)), one has to look at her perspective before reacting. I think she means to say that over the time, the middle class has lost it's ideological values and is mearly pursuing materialistic pleasuers. The Poor have become relatively poorer. The moot point is, when every person in the society is left to fend for his own, the society suffers all togather. To all those who argued "who stands up for the middle class ?" I agree, we don't even have a union or an organization to fend for us !!

Indian Middle calss - Selfish?????? Is this Illa Bhatt following in George Bush's footsteps???
If the lower-middle class and lower class cannot keep up with the others then does it make sense to pull down the one who is rising/ doing well???

Its only the middle class people who are sincerely paying the taxes to the government and and as stated by nh the rich class & the politicians only want to build their bank accounts securing their future. What is the government doing for the middle class. Ms. Ela Bhatt has either not donn her homework well or wants to come to the limelight supporting the politician and the rich class.

Hey srinath before you critisized government and politicain ask yourself what you had done for your country only taxes can not built the country.I think efforts and revolution in right directions can only built the country. Now if you had seen the whole video of Ilaben Bhatt she also said that "she is against the aid which is directly given to the farmer",,,,,now this is enough to realize that she is not trying to support any government or any wrong steps taken by govenment.

My first comment is for above people who wrote against the Ila ben,First you should know that she is came from middle class family and she had give all her life and Ideas that veryfew people can think (i.e Out of the box) in India. You should respect her whatever she had done.....i think you have half knowledge first go to SEWA,Ahmedabad and see how they working and how they inspired women to use their money in right direction. My second comment is that to Ila ben (Mam please read if u get chance),I have example in my family,my aunty her name is Amisha....she all the time give your example and appreciate your kindness as well as your honesty in your work.My aunty AMISHA she came from lower middle class family because of you and your efforts now she can able to give An Education to their child......Mam I really respect you. Please keep it up whatever you doing. The people who comments against her please put your self in her charecter and ask your self whether I can do anything else otherthan my children whatever she is doing? Best wishes from HARDIK SHAH.

I respect you thoughts and feelings and at the same time your experience is also important. But at the same time One should know what he or she is talking. There are people in every strata of the society who are selfish. So branding the middle class as selfish is absolutely wrong. The politicians and the rich class can come forward and assist the society as they know that they are capable of.Is this not selfish and living for themselves? So i would definately not agree with what Ela Bhatt has said.

Long back in 1991 at the time of the economic reforms it was clear that we had recognized the fact that each one of us is inherently selfish. Thank goodness we finally realized it. Society will excel only if "selfish" individuals are allowed to flourish.

I would want Illa Bhatt to step into the houses of middle class families and spend time with them. You will get your answer. The governmet does not want to accept the fact the SC/SC are the once who are selfish. Every second so called SC/ST family owns at least two sits of theis own and other properties disproportionate to their know source of Income. Half knowledge is always dangerous

'middle class is becoming more selfish and they want more and more for themselves and their children' , what in the world is she saying. is it a crime to want more for our future generations?? the middle class payes the taxes madam not the rich class, so please dont give such off-the-cuff remarks.. its the middle class that contributes to the growing economy today, not your rich politicians who do nothing but swindle money.
