New Delhi: Women have become more health conscious now, but they don’t have time to put a healthy meal together so they grab fortified foods.

But what are fortified foods in the first place?

Fortification involves the addition of nutrients to foods, many of these foods claim to address deficiencies that cause anemia and osteoporosis.

Some of such women-oriented products are:

  • Special K: a weight management cereal.
  • Women's Horlicks that is high on health quotient.
  • Muesli breakfast cereal, muesli bar and whole wheat crackers that are rich in proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, good fats and fibre.
  • Manna health mix targeted at pregnant ladies and busy professionals that also helps to tackle diabetes.

The big question however, is can these foods substitute a healthy meal?

“You can fortify foods with Iron, calcium, zinc, magnesium etc but you cannot fortify them with enzymes and anti-oxidants, some of which have been discovered and some of which are yet to be discovered,” says nutritionist, Shikha Sharma.

Working women have limited time to cook a healthy meal, so they do not mind giving these products a try.

FMCG biggies have tapped this very market----the urban independent woman.

They have taken out a variety of products to enrich a woman's diet with minerals and vitamins.

Some of these products even promise to reduce weight in addition to providing nutrients.

Weight management and weight loss specifically is the high order need of the urban Indian woman both in larger as well as smaller towns.

The message is clear, eat healthy and exercise regularly and you may not need to invest in fortified foods at all.
