INFORMATION DENIED: Out of the 26 state commissions, 18 did not even acknowledge Reddy's applications.
New Delhi: Ever wondered how informed agencies implementing the Right to Information act, really are? That's the question that prompted Rajya Sabha MP MV Mysure Reddy to apply for information in 26 state information commissions under the RTI Act of 1995.
If the response is anything to go by, then India is not faring too well. Out of the 26 state commissions, 18 did not even acknowledge his applications.
“Even in my home state of Andhra Pradesh. I did not get a suitable reply,” he said.
Out of the 14 questions asked in the application, most were turned down with non maintenance of data being cited as the main reason.
Part of the pack were questions seeking info on the total number of cases received, disposed and pending with each commission.
There was also a question on the number of complaints of non-compliance and another on the number of cases in which the files have been lost by the commission.
After being disappointed with the response of the state and central commissions, Reddy planned to introduce amendments to the RTI Act in the next Parliament session.
“I have the written to the prime minister for a reply,” he says.
