Mulayam turns to minorities for votes

A STEP AHEAD? Mulayam appealed to the minorities to vote for his party in order to keep the BJP out of power.
New Delhi: Ahead of the Assembly polls in the state, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav is leaving no stone unturned to garner support for his party.
The Samajwadi Party supremo appealed to the minorities to vote for his party in order to keep the BJP out of power.
"Only Samajwadi Party is strong enough to keep BJP away from power in Uttar Pradesh as Congress is not in a position to check the growth of the saffron party," PTI quoted Yadav as saying.
While pointing out that the people all over the country have rejected the Congress, Mulayam reinstated that the party had faced a crushing defeat in the recent Assembly polls in Punjab and Uttarakhand.
He also blamed the Congress of raking up the temple-mosque issue to gain political mileage. "These parties always raise this issue (temple-mosque issue) during election times to derive political mileage," he said while referring to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's recent remarks on the demolition of Babri masjid.
The SP leader also alleged that BJP, BSP and Congress have joined hands against his party in the upcoming polls.
The polling for the first phase of the Assembly polls in Uttar radesh will begin on April 7 and the subsequent six phases will end by May 7.
In all likelihood, the polls will witness a four-cornered contest, with the incumbent Samajwadi Party making a valiant effort to retain power and the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party trying to emerge as the single largest party.
The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress will be the two other main contenders in the race.
